Homecoming 2007 Details

Brothers,

Sept. 19, 2007 - First I would like to say what a great game this past Friday night. Beating Oklahoma State. Also a big thanks to the active zeta for the evening. The band was awesome.

Here are the events planned for Homecoming Weekend

Friday October 19

• Golf Tournament
Lunch at 11:30 am at Troy Country Club
Catfish Lunch for around $6.50, or you can order from the menu
Golf Tee Time is set for 12:30 p.m. at the cost of $30.

• Cocktail Party at the home of Doug and Christa Kitchens
7-9 p.m.

Cost is 7.50 a person. This helps with food. If you are willing to help please let me know. I am also asking brothers that will contribute to the cocktails to contact me.

• 10-2 a.m. - Party continues at the LXA House on Pell Avenue

Saturday October 20

• 10 a.m. - Alumni Meeting at the house

• 12 noon - Tailgating under the tent on Shackleford Quad
We are getting the food. BBQ. You can contribute to this - around $7:50 a plate if you are willing to help. If not, still let me know if you are coming.

• 6:30 p.m. - Dinner at the fraternity House. This will be held to give us a chance to all be together. Plate cost is $7.50. The reason we are charging is we have asked the whole chapter and their dates, also the parents of the brothers and associates. I think that with such a great rush this will be a great showing of us. Please try to come to all these things.

• 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. - Band Party ... Paul Patterson has got the band for us to play this year out of Mobile.

Order Your Commemorative T-shirt

Also, their will be T-shirts for you to order. The cost is $15 a shirt. I need to know if you want one by Oct. 5. For me to order, I need your check, The shirts are white with "Lambda Chi Alpha" on the front and on the back a picture of the old house on Three Notch Street. These are being done by our alumni Shannon Collins of ScreenTech in Dothan.

I think that covers it all. Please read and let me know as soon as possible what you will do with us that weekend.

Lambda Chi Alpha Chapter, House & Homecoming Update

Brothers:

Aug. 14, 2007 - Here is an update on the following semester at Troy.

The house renovation is just about complete. The women's bathroom, men's bathroom, and furniture for the rooms are complete.

The deck has to be stained, the bar for the kitchen delivered and the wall divisions are being put in today or tomorrow.

The house is full with 12 brothers. This marks the first time in years the house has been full. For older alumni, the house capacity was 11. The chapter went to
private rooms a few years back - one must compete with the times.

It should be a good rush for fall. The goal of 25 associates set by the chapter will be met and they will go past that number.

My hat's off to Josh Sowell and the alumni who sent recommendations for the guys.

Also, the actives have done a great job helping.

Homecoming is Oct. 20. I am in the middle of getting all the information out to you about that weekend. The preliminary Homecoming information is as follows:

Friday, Oct. 19
Cocktail party at Doug Kitchens' home in Troy from 7 to 9 p.m., then back to the house at 10 p.m. to hang out and socialize.

Saturday, Oct. 20
10 a.m. - Coffee reception at the house. This is a chance for brothers and friends of the fraternity to come by before the game and visit and see the house.

All the associates and active brothers parents are being invited for all activities. Also, parents of brothers who have passed away, former Lambda Chi Alpha little sisters, advisors and house moms will be invited to be a part of this celebration.

11:30 a.m. - Tailgating under the fraternity tent on the Pace Quad. This will be a BBQ.

2 p.m. - Football game then the game vs. North Texas. Efforts will be made to secure a block of seats in Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium. If you are interested in buying seats in a block, please e-mail Bob Markey at BMarkey@PalmsWestPress.com.

6 p.m. - After the game, the time will be set for all to return to the house for dinner. We need you to be apart of this - a show of unity for the chapter. We will have a meeting for a few minutes to answer questions and also show the plans for the new living accommodations.

I have got the invitations ordered. I am just waiting to get all the last-minute detail tied up so they can go to print.

There will be Homecoming T-shirt. Cost is $15. It must be ordered by Oct. 5.

Thank you for the support - not only the e-mails but those that have given financially, and also of their time. If ever our chapter has made a turn for the best, it has been now.

Thank you for your belief in Lambda Chi Alpha and us the alumni who have worked hands on here. Please know that we take the money you send and are good stewards of this.

We also have a good hands-on working with the active chapter. We are not backing away.

To answer questions of how we are spending the money, please call me at 334-318-6027.

Please email me back if you have any questions or suggestions.

Big Improvement Plans for Fraternity House

By Woods Culpepper

April 2007 - As of yesterday we have had 90 brothers to join the alumni association. This is great. I know many more of you are sending your checks and some of you are just finding out about this.

We have had many brothers to step up to help me with finding lost brothers. I would like to say David Young, Josh Sowell, Terry Riley, Mike Carty, Justin Knox, Hiram Davis, Jeff Annis, Michael Babb, David Baldwin, Don McGee, Bob Markey and many others are doing a great job to help. If you know of brothers you stay in contact with let us know. We are missing many email addresses. We have correct email addresses on around 160 borthers out of 603

Now for the good news. As stated before I did meet with the university. They are going to do a major redo on the house for us this summer. Here is the following list of what will be done

1. Kitchen will be gutted and done over.

2. Girls bathroom will be enlarged and done over.

3. Hallway from Chapter room to Back Hall will be plastered and painted.

4. Hall way in living area will be plastered and painted.

5. Ceiling tiles will be replaced.

6. Rooms will be repainted.

7. Bathroom will be enlarged. The wall between laundry room and bathroom will be removed. Seperate shower units, commodes, and new vanity. Water heater will be moved from laundry room to the next room by it.

9. The next room after the aundry room will become the new laundry room. We will have 2 washers and 2 dryers there. They will be coin operated.

10. The big room on that side of the hall will become the fraternity office and study hall area for brothers and associates.

11. The windows will be fixed.

12. The house will be painted.

13 The air conditioners outside will have a wall built around them.

14. The floors in the chapter room will be done over.

This is going to cost us nothing. So when the summer rush party is here, the house will be brand new. We are going to have a work party on the weekend of July 13. I need to know what brothers will come and help us with this.

Also we are going to do a major yard scape. Bill Novick is in charge of that endeavor. Bill I have talked with the school and they will help with some of this cost.

There is a rush seminar being taught with the chapter in April. Justin Knox, Matt Dail, Josh Sowell and Neal Morris is leading this. This will be for the actives and it is mandatory for them to attend.

The rush and social calendar is set through December of 2007

The house will be filled for the fall. The cost is $850 a semester. The brothers will sign a lease and have to pay their rent the day they move in. There will be a small deposit for the room. Refundable if the room is kept up. The room rent will be paid to the housing corp. David Baldwin will be in charge of this. Thank you, David

Summer party is July 21st. This is a major rush party for them. We will be helping them not only financially but some of us will be there. This is for rush so if you plan to come let us know so you can help us

This journey has been awesome for me. I could not have done this without the Alumni committee, David Baldwin, Herb Reeves, James Hoyt, the actives of the chapter, and many of you brothers that have given through the years.

I really feel the chapter has the chance to turn around and be an awesome Lambda Chi Alpha chapter. This will be done by the actives and our financial support and also our one on one with them. Never again will we just give money. They need us to help guide them and be there for support.

If you have not joined yet please consider to do so. I personally think $10 a month is worth every great memory Lambda Chi Alpha gave me. The checks are made out to the Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Association. You mail them to me and I will make sure they go into the account:

Thank you again brothers for your time, your concern and most of all your loyalty as men to your oaths you gave. May your light so shine

$1630

$815

$1630

There were funds still remaining in the Housing corporation from our last contribution drive 2 years ago.  This money will be used to pay the past due mortgage on the house.  The mortgage balance is about $70,000.  The past due amount is about $12,000.

We have agreed to subsidize the chapter through the end of this year for the mortgage up to our 40% of contributions limit, however, it is also agreed that the active chapter MUST have no less than 10 persons living in the house beginning in the fall.  This rule was relaxed several years ago, which has caused for a severe shortfall.

Excess funds may be necessary to assist in Rush next year.  This will come from the housing funds since the income from the brothers living in the house will fund the mortgage.

The Active brothers will be instructed that money cannot be committed for bands or extraordinary expenses unless they have the excess money to fund this.  The Alumni Association will stop all funding if chapter income is not first used for fixed obligations to operate the fraternity.

OK, now some incredible news.  To start, Troy is thinking about NOT building a new fraternity row, and realizes that money would be better spent by Troy and the Fraternities if they stay where they are.  The land behind the current house could be used for new construction and possibly adding on to the current house.  This has not been determined yet, but is certainly preferred.

Woody Culpepper had a meeting with Troy last week to discuss our plans to refurbish the house to make it more livable.  He was told they were so impressed with the way our Alumni have stepped in to re-build our chapter and to pay off back debts that they too would like to help us with our endeavor.   Although not finalized yet, the following has been verbally agreed too:

Troy will perform and pay for the following:

  1. Gut and replace the kitchen
  2. New card key doors on all entrances (already in process)
  3. Gut and replace current woman’s bathroom and enlarge outward.
  4. Gut and replace men’s bathroom and split into two rooms.  One room for toilets, the other for private showers.  They will use one of the current bedrooms to make the expansion.
  5. A new coin operated laundry room will be added.
  6. New ceiling tiles in all rooms.
  7. Other miscellaneous items.

During the summer, many of us will be helping with other projects around the house including new landscaping, painting etc.

Brothers, had it not been for your efforts, we would not have this opportunity to breath new life into our chapter.  Woody has spent a great deal of time and effort working on this project and to him I am grateful.

We only have 13% of our Alumni who have made this a reality.  Our next effort is to be able to build a new house or add on to the current house in the next few years, but we need more Alumni to step up and make their contributions.  For those of you contributing monthly, please don’t forget to make that payment.

Please make reservation for homecoming next year, it will no doubt be the one NOT to miss after all of these efforts.  If you’re not sure if you can come yet, at least make hotel reservation that can be cancelled, or used by someone else.

This has been a great year for Sigma Tau, and many of us have re-kindled relationships with each other.  Let’s keep the candle burning!

Chapter House Update:
We Made it, But Money Needs Continue

Please read the latest information

2004 - Thanks to great financial support from a relatively small number of alumni, Sigma Tau Zeta has paid off its more than 20-year-old, $38,000 debt to Troy University (housing payments), incurred mostly by long-gone alumni.

A small group of alumni instantly halved that debt with a donation of $19,000. The remaining money was raised in only a few weeks, thanks to the coordination of Housing Corporation Chairman David Baldwin.

If the debt had not been paid, Troy University officials might have initiated foreclosure proceedings and a legal fight might have ensued.

The chapter and alumni continue to ask for the support - no matter how small - of the other several hundred alumni in ensuring that repairs can be made to the current house and that the new house on the new fraternity row can be built and properly furnished.

Can you spare $10, $50, $100, $1000 or even $10,000? Many of our alumni have done just that, including one brother who donated his entire house down payment savings ($5,000) and another who is unemployed but managed to come up with $20.

Please do your part to help the chapter stay in the black and rebuild its membership. The chapter will have approximately $68,000 in equity in the existing house, which can be turned into a down payment on a new house. The alumni will then be expected to help properly furnish the new house.

These donations are tax-deductible. Please e-mail Housing Corp. Chairman David Baldwin at David@TheBaldwinAgency.com and let him know how much you can send. Please do it today!

The active chapter has made great strides in keeping current with payments and catching up on much of the debt. Some of that debt was incurred by many of us - the alumni. It is up to us now to finally help get the chapter back in its financial feet. Its members have already made great sacrifices in paying high dues, cutting back on social events and putting off needed house improvements. Yet, the fraternity is growing and making us proud by improving its grade point average and winning this year's Greek Week competition. The brotherhood is strong and growing and it is up to the established alumni to provide a financial push to get the chapter solvent once and for all.

Chapter House Update: Looks Like We Made it, But Money Needs Continue

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of 81 of our Alumni brothers, the house at 404 Pell Avenue is safely in our hands and the Pi Kapps, while not very happy about it, are having to look elsewhere. We have paid off the back debt to Troy University and are off and running.

We are the envy of every Fraternity on the Troy University campus. They just cannot believe what YOU have accomplished. Most of the Administration had written our Chapter off, thinking that there would be no way we could accomplish this goal. "They just can't see, what we can see."

The Chapter is busy preparing for what will be a great Homecoming, in more ways than one. We have a lot to celebrate. TSU has provided, free of charge, the materials to re-deck the Alumni hangout (Front Deck) and Dr. Hoyt and the guys are going to have it ready for HC. Ceiling tiles are being replaced and a roof will be built over the bar area. Very soon, the University will be having the parking lot and curbs re-done. Rotten fascia is being replaced and the house and grounds cleaned up.

The next phase of the Donation Challenge will center on the Alumni who have not yet given to the effort. Bob Markey is working to update the website with address corrections for our next mailing. Please take some time to look over the list and give Bob corrections as needed. We really need your help on this. Many of our Alumni are not even aware of what's been happening over the last three weeks or so. We owe them the favor of letting them know what's happened, what we have done about it, and to give them the opportunity to participate.

If you haven't made a donation yet, now is the time. We are actively looking to move on the new house and will need your financial assistance to make it happen.

Chapter Needs $38,000 Now Or Faces Eviction

Sept. 7, 2004 - As I write this letter, there are two desperate situations that need our immediate attention. First, Hurricane Frances is bearing down on Florida and we have a large number of our brothers, sisters, and their families in its path. There is not much we can do for them at this point but pray that God grants them safe passage thru this storm and offer our support to them after it’s over.

The other situation is also desperate, but we can do something about it. We are about to loose our Chapter’s house. We are still $38,000 in arrears to TSU and our fundraising efforts have had dismal results. The last letter that I sent to you only raised about $3,000. While a few of you did contribute to our efforts, most did not.

The Sigma Tau house account has been under serious scrutiny by the State Auditors because we are so far behind and have been in default for s
